Nolan opened his mouth.

The name landed in the room, heavy and accurate. Throat Engines.
And Nolan looked from the dark spheres on the screen to the distant, alien stars shining through the wormhole’s mouth. The universe was sealed, he had believed once. And every night, Nolan floated alone in the observation bay and looked through the wormhole at the other side.
A different sky. The distance shattered. And arrayed around the mouth, the dark spheres of the Throat Engines drifted in their ancient orbits—patient, silent, tending a doorway that had been open since before anything on Earth had learned to breathe.
